AUTOSOLO
1st (886secs) Gruffydd Parry (above left) collecting the winning trophy from CoC Lee Matthews (right), and in action (below) on his way to repete his 2006 victory. He drove much neater than normal, as he had a Road rally to compete in on the same evening and needed the car in one piece. Pity he didn't drive safe and tidy on that event too, as he ended up rolling the Nova.

2nd (910secs) David Dunlop (below) came chasing BTRDA points in the standard Fiesta 1.4. His driving style was a vast contracst to the handbraking locals, but was very effective, and the Fiesta was pushed hard through the turns, making the front tyres work well. An excellent performance which kept the top runners on their toes, and showed these events ARE suitable for standard road cars.

3rd (917secs) John Hunter (below) used his road car, a Turbo Charged Escort Mk5. A fast car then. Well, not really, as it was a DEISEL! Given a competitive car I'm sure we'll see his name on some winning trophies in the not too distant future. This guy gets my "Driver of the Day" mention.

4th (922secs) Siôn Matthews was the initial favourite for this AutoSOLO, and indeed the youngster (below) set the fastest time on the first set of tests. But, an engine mounting soon failed on the red MAS Nova which had him coasting for the rest of the day just to salvage fourth beforre pushing hard (below) on the last test of the day.

5th (952secs) Carlos Cordero (below) came fifth in his Nissan Almera Gti. The Spaniard enjoyed the day, making his long journey to Anglesey worth while, and promised to came back again.

6th Tomos Parry (1000secs) (below) used his new Corsa, but a misfire all day in the 1.2 16V enigine, and a sticking-on handbrake slowed him. and sixth was all he could have hoped for.

This Caernarvonshire & Anglesey Motor Club organised AutoSOLO was a round of the BTRDA and ANWCC Allrounders championship, so had some quick and competitive drivers taking part. The event was held at the Anglesey Showground over 12 tests, thats 4 runs at each of 3 different courses set up on the roads. Each test lasted at least 1 min 35 secs and were run all-forward (no reversing). There were STOP lines and Cones to negociate, each incuring 5second penalties each, but just in case of a poor performace or brakedown, 1 of 4 runs at each test could be dropped for results, so only the best 3 of 4 runs counted. This kept the competition close, as even if a mechanical failure, such as Sion Matthews Mounting failure mid-test, that could be dropped.
In addition to the AutoSOLO there were 2 more events, and Autotest for the non-road legal cars and a PCA for those wishing to take passengers for a scare!
Dafydd Huw Thomas Memorial PCA
1st Lee Barnes / Stephen Roberts (893secs) (Below) The 2006 DHT PCA winner put in a strirring performance with total concentration to retain the winners Shield, despite worrying just how close John Hunters times were to his. However, Lees Penalty-free driving paid dividens in the end, and well deserved the applause at the end.

2nd John Hunter / Tom Unsworth (911secs) John (below) perhaps had an adavantage over his fellow PCA comrades as he had also entered the AutoSOLO, which went first. This gave him a "practise run", so his PCA times were quick, quick enough to have won if it were not for the odd Cone penalty collected on the way to a magnificent result.

3rd Endaf Jones / Tomos Parry (962secs) No dramas this time for Endaf (below), the 17-year old keeping it neat and tidy to a podium finish in the Metro.

4th Chris Brierley / Kevin Griffiths (1014secs) Chris's new 1.6 Nova (below) was not running as it should (later traced to a faulty carb') so was down on power. This was coupled with a handbrake cable snapping on test 2, and had to do 3 tests like that before having time to sneek home to get the spare cable and fit it. Once fitted he enjoyed the rest of the day, but a good result was gone by then. Looking forward to the next one.

5th Sam Evans / Steven Morris (1102secs). As the 17-year old has not yet passed his driving test he was restricted to 1400cc, so had to leave the rally 205 at home. He bought this 1.3 SR Nova (below) the day before the event so that he could compete and everything looked good on test 1 until a severve missfire/knocking developed in the engine. He continued like this for 7 tests, before calling it a day on test 9 which meant he was classified, although in last place. He enjoyed the tests, but was frustrated with the car.

Retired - Gavin Ryan & Graham Hignett. The new Micra was turned out nice (below) as the dual drivers negociated the first set of tests, and were putting in top times, an excellent acheivment concidering only a 1000cc. Unfortunalety the clutch cried enough after 7 runs and started to slip, bad enough to have to retire from the event.

Autotest
1st Mark Bailey (1005secs) As the only entry to this section all he had to do was finish. But he had his sights set on beating some of the PCA and AutoSOLOers too, so tried hard in the Nova (below) which now has a 1.4 engine. A fine result.

A big thanks to the venue owners, and to the Marshals Dewi Jones, Ieuan Roberts and Darren Jones and the Timekeepers (below on the start/finish line) Tecwyn Jones and Gruffydd Thomas.

Next event is in late October, probably at the Showground. Watch this space for more details as they are confirmed.
This Multi-permit speed event at the Anglesey Showground was a chance to say "Stuff the Turkey, Lets go and play in the cars!". And on December 30th we did. Or at least 37 drivers did, and many took passengers along too in the PCA Section. As you can see from the Duncan Littler photo's the weather was appauling, it rained hard most of the day, coming in horizontal most of the time, as it was during those periods of heavy gails that were reported on the TV. We would like to thank the marshals for sticking at it, especially Paul Cross, Dewi Hughes, Dylan Humphreys, Ieuan Roberts and Tecwyn Jones.
In the AutoSOLO section Alastair Moffatt (above) borrowed this Corsa and came along looking for maximum Competition Car Insurance BTRDA Allrounders championship points. He won the AutoSOLO, but it wasn't quite enough to clinch the 2006 championship from Duncan Stephens. His main rival on the day was young Sion Matthews (below left), but the newly fettled Nova, now sporting a 1.4 engine was missfiring badly, later traced to a faulty fuel pump, and did well to finish 4th.

Duncan Wild (above right) borrowed his wifes Golf 1.8T and used his Autotest experience to take 2nd O/A, showing modern cars can be competitive, even when standard!
Other AutoSOLO drivers:

Above: Derwyn Roberts - 5th AutoSOLO Gruffydd Parry - 6th O/A AutoSOLO
Below: Mark & Will Barnes - 8th & 9th Phil Williams - 10th nearly going off!

In the PCA section Baz Green/Chris Jones (below) were the pace-setters, not only winning the PCA, but also faster than anyone else, including the AutoSOLOer's.

The 2006 MAS Challenge champions, Lee Barnes/Stephen Roberts (below left) had to settle for runner up in the PCA this time, but were still 4th fastest overall in the blue 205 Gti, and are are hoping to defend their 2006 title, this event being the 1st of 6 rounds in the 2007 series. Mark & Justin Campbell won the Large engined class in their new 1.8 Escort Mk2 (Below right).

Eric (Chubby) Roberts debuted the new 2.0 16V Nova (Below left) and was very quick, but hit nearly every single cone penalty in the venue on his way to 10th PCA. Aled Parry & Ricky Evans (Below right)spun on this corner and were lucky not to get stuck, but later they clipped a gateway in the Corsa and retired.

In the AUTOTEST section Carey Lindley (below) and his dad Mick brought along yet another car, this time a Nova, and Carey won!
The next MAS CHALLENGE Event is on Saturday 14th April at The Showground featured here. 1st 40 entries only. Entries taken on the day if spaces still available. Regs out soon on www.anwcc.org or e-mail lee4eve@aol.com

C&A MC. 02-09-07. RAF VALLEY. 12 starters / 9 finishers
On September 2nd the RAF were holding an open Track-day on the Air Fields at RAF Valley, and C&A MC joined in the organising by running an Autotest & PCA on one of the vacant Airstrips. They set up two sites, side-by side for the 12 entrants. Test 1 was a sequence of 360 turns around 4 cones and a reverse throw. David Evans, the initial favourate had a wrong test on test 1 when he 360'ed the wrong way, Clockwise as opposed to the correct anti-clockwise. However, this test max time could be dropped, as only the best 2 of 3 runs count, so it wasn't over yet, and he put in a stong challenge in his NCF Blitz special, debuting the new 2.0litre Vauxhall engine in the rear. A few cone faults early on would cost him a podium place at the end.
Fastest on the opening test was local Welsh International, Lee Matthews, sharing his son's 1.4 Nova, setting up a lead he would not relenquish, although John Barry Williams had a go, when he posted a fastest time on the penultimate test of the day, a full 5 seconds quicker than anyone else by reverse throwing the last manover very late at top speed in reverse, as opposed to Lee's early flick, then stuck on the limiter going forward. It's all in the details! It wasn't until reseults were posted that they realised just how close it was after the 18 tests, just 0.46 of a second seperateing the top two drivers.
3rd Place fell to regular winner, newly turned 17 year old Siôn Matthews who by his own admission was having a "meadiocker day", choosing 2nd gear for the long slalom, whilst his dad was on the rev limiter in 1st gear all the way through.
In 5th position was the first of the "with passenger" PCA entries, Lee Barnes/Stephen Roberts who were having a desperate day adjusting the poor handbreak between runs. It never worked right all day, and were plesently surprised to find they had beaten regular rivals Endaf Jones/Ianto Jones in the Metro. But, Endaf did collect a few cone faults. Chris Brierly/Kevin Griffiths debuted the new Nova 1.6 road rally car, but, like Lee Barnes, the handbrake wasn't working as well as it should. Still, a good performance, and the car held out to take 7th O/A, 3rd PCA, ahead of an impresive performance from Alan Webster in the huge BMW. The final finisher, 9th O/a was Mark Bailey who missed the last 4 tests after an engine missfire/rattle developed.
There were 3 retirements. Ryan Cardwell/Richard Jones snapped a driveshaft on the 205 Gti on test 4, while Stephen Jones and Edward Griffiths completed the whole event in the dual driven Metro, only to go home without handing in their time cards! I bet they don't do that again.
Thanks to the CO and officers at RAF Valley for allowing the use of this excellent venue, and the organisers and marshals. These included Dewi, Lynne, Dylan, Arwel, Aled, Tecwyn, Gruffydd, and a poorley Ieuan.
