Bodafon Forest Autotest (report)

C&A MC ran their annual October Production Car Autotest at a new venue, Bodafon Forest, Anglesey. The event would consist of 3 sites, run 6 times each.

The 16 drivers were split into two groups of 8, so while group A drove, group B marshalled, then after 3 runs they swapped over, then again in the afternoon.

Site A started at the top of the mountain in the open air of the parking area, then entered the forest steep downhill through a sequence of 3 hairpin bends on the loose surface track, finishing at the bottom of the mountain just after a slalom of 3 cones placed to slow the cars down and catch out those trying too hard on the final 100 metre dash to the finish line.

Site B was a simlpe 100 metre straight blast to a small turning area where cars handbrake turned around and raced back to the start/finish line. Sounds boring? Not so! Cars were fish-tailing all the way along the straight of this off-cambered forest track. Exciting stuff.

Cars then parked up for a couple of minutes to await all 8 cars to clear Site A, and after the Course Closing Car came through the instruction to start site C was given.

Site C was a reverse run of Site A, now a steep up-hill slalom followed by the 3 hairpin bends.

This was a seriously enjoyable event despite the apparent shortness of the stages. Sorry, "Tests"!

The weather was glorious for the time of year. The ground was damp enough from the previous days rain to keep off any dust, yet the sun came out for the event itself. The noise of the cars echoing through the trees really made this a memorable event.

Tomos Parry navigated both these cars, first with Siôn Matthews (Nova - above left), whose smooth and rapid lines set quickest times all day long on his way to a dominant win; then in with Endaf Jones (Metro - above right) who was quickest on test 1 by a second, but then slid into a ditch on the way back up the hill and knocked the sump plug off. Retired.

Lee Barnes / Stephen Roberts (above left) had a slow start in the 205Gti and a few cone penalties inthe first half, but got their act together in the second stint to come back to a fine 2nd O/A at the end. Gavin Ryan / Graham Hignett (above right) thrashed the poor little Micra 1000 all day long, but it held together to be 2nd at the dinner break, but had to make way for a flying Lee Barnes in the afternoon to settle for 3rd overall, and 1st under 1300cc class. Graham had a go at driving in group B too, but after a disasterous start when he went off on the first corner he decided the left seat was safer, and as it was Ryans car he drove no more.

Efion and Hugh Jones (205Gti - above left) were really trying hard and were 3rd at the break, but pushed too hard later in the event and clipped many cones to drop to 4th after the 18 runs.Just 3 seconds further down the results in 5th position was the ever-improving Chris Brierley / Kevin Griffiths in the Nova (above right) who could be heard coming by the banging of the low sumpguard.

Aron Renshaw (above left) has made a return to motorsport after a few years away and had the bonus of Sion Matthews giving directions from the left seat. The boat suspension on the standard Daewoo Nexia made for interesting lines and culminated in a few cone faults to take 6th place, just one place and 10 seconds ahead of Carey Lindley with his dad alongside in the 1200cc Nova (above right)

8th spot went to Mark Bailey / Morgan Shore (above left) who has now got over his nerves after rolling his last Nova on a recent event. John Hunter / David McMillan came back to Anglesey in his Escort TD (above right) and was in contension for a top 5 place when he slid into a ditch on the penultimate set of tests and cracked the alloy sump. He gained maximums for the remaining tests while he waited for the body filler to harden to effect a temporary repair to drive the long distance home.12th O/A.

Mad Mick Lindley (above left on 2 wheels) drove with enthusiasm to 9th, while the top 10 was rounded off by Gruffydd Parry / Merfyn Williams who used a  Fiesta (above right) and spent most of the day trying to get out of ditches, or jump accross them!

11th. Ricky B Evans / R.Evans (above) had a couple of punctures on the Astra while visiting a ditch at the slalom, but still won the Over 1600cc class. Neil Jones / Lee Barnes (below right) copied Rickys ditch excursion and resultant punctures, but also suffered with a burst hose and overheating on the 205Gti to finish last place having missed a few tests waiting for the car to cool.  The main casualty of the day was Damien Guildford/ Stephen Roberts who's effort to "power out" of one ditch saw them jump the road and nose dive into the opposite (picture below left). With a little marshal power the car drove out of this, but the damaged sump on the borrowed AX GT put them out of the event.

This was a fantastic event. Thanks to Peter for use of this excellent venue, and to the Timekeepers and officials: Lee Matthews, Dewi Hughes, Gruff Thomas, Tecwyn Jones, Darren Jones.

Results:

1st Siôn Matthews (Nova) 481secs; 2nd Lee Barnes (205Gti) 518 secs; 3rd Gavin Ryan (Micra) 529secs; 4th Eifion Jones (205Gti) 541secs; 5th Chris Brierley (Nova) 544secs; 6th Aron Renshaw (Nexia) 549secs; 7th Carey Lindley (Nova) 559secs; 8th Mark Bailey (Nova) 574secs; 9th Mike Lindley (Nova) 576secs; 10th Gruffydd Parry (Fiesta) 586secs; 11th Ricky B Evans (Astra) 586secs - tie decider; 12th John Hunter (Escort TD) 596secs; 13th Neil Jones (205Gti) 746secs.
